How to develop the curriculum for your own teaching business?

November 6, 2019 by James Liu Leave a Comment

Have you ever developed a curriculum?

Is the challenge of developing a curriculum stopping you from starting your own business?

The truth is:

Developing your curriculum for your own business is super easy.

I know if you are teaching with brick and mortar schools or online ESL companies, it can seem impossible for you to develop a curriculum like theirs, even though their curriculums might not be perfect.

However, there is a key difference between these companies’ curriculums and the one you’ll develop for your own business.

Their curriculums are complicated because they have to serve a broad audience and make sure every single student can use the same curriculum, even though students’ backgrounds vary.

Your curriculum is very straightforward, as you will develop it for a specific group of students (your niche) that share the same problems you can address with this curriculum.

So simple.

You just need to:

1, Identify the problems you need to solve for your niche

2, Categorize the problems and put them into pillars

3, Develop session content within each pillar to solve the problems

For instance, you are going to help international graduates improve their English and prepare for job interviews in the US.

To put together your curriculum,

1, Identify the problems you need to solve for your niche

Why do they need your help? How can you help them get their dream job?

It’s obvious!

They need to know:

– How to prepare a resume and cover letter

– How to network to secure interviews

– How to perform in the interviews

2, Categorize the problems and put them into pillars

It’s very straightforward.

You will have 3 pillars in your curriculum:

– Resume and cover letter building

– Networking skills

– Interview skills

3, Develop session content within each pillar to solve the problems

Enrich each pillar with relevant content that you can find free from tons of resources online, such as YouTube videos, free teaching websites, etc.

Then you will have the curriculum for your own business!

So, don’t let curriculum development stand in the way of starting your own business!
