If you are marketing yourself online, you know what I’m talking about.
You can have thousands of followers on Instagram that actively give you likes on your pictures and videos.
You can have thousands of subscribers to your YouTube channel that actively comment on your videos.
You can have thousands of group members in your Facebook group that actively engage with you.
But, when you try to help them with a fee, everybody disappears, and nobody is willing to pay.
They are freeloaders.
Why are you only attracting freeloaders?
Because you position yourself as an ESL teacher who offers free English teaching materials. And freeloaders are looking for free online English resources.
So, you attract freeloaders.
How can you avoid them?
Change your positioning to attract paying students.
Paying students are looking for solutions to problems they need to solve when it comes to English.
When you position yourself as an expert who can solve these problems for them, you attract paying students.
Here is an example:
Positioning that attracts freeloaders:
“I help English learners improve their English.”
Positioning that attracts paying students:
“I help business professionals improve their job performance with advanced English communication skills.”
